On the morning of June 24, 2006 a committee of the First Mountain Chapter of the New Jersey Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, composed of President Rick Backlund, Duane Meyer, Ray Veghte, Bill Volonte and Eric Bal*, as a group, went to the historic Revolutionary War site known as "Washinton's Rock Lookout" overlooking the Township of Millburn, in the South Mountain Reservation in Essex County, to pay tribute to our forefathers who hallowed that ground, and the surrounding area, by stopping the Britsh Army's advance there in the summer of 1780, precipitating the permanent departure of British forces from New Jersey soil, and to observe the condition of the site to assess what maintainance, improvements or commemorative events, might be sought to preserve its history and condition, and its accessibility and enjoyment, for all Americans and their posterity.
The field trip committee will report to the First Mountain Chapter membership at its next meeting and determine what recommendations to make, and what course of action to pursue, to further the maintenance and improvment of this important site in the founding of our nation.
